VAN ABBEMUSEUM BLOGS

We at the Van Abbemuseum see the role of new media as something imperative to museum practice in the 21st century. The immediate access and feedback facilitated by online forums and blogging coincides with our vision of an open institution, transparent about its methods, motives and meanings. Following the links below will take you to the museum's project specific weblogs that provide the in-depth explorations and conversations that underscore our work. We encourage you to read and open your mind to the discoveries you make here. We look forward to your comments!

Library Blog

S.Lloyd Trumpstein

"Outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read." - Groucho Marx

The library blog has been launched as a more dynamic way of keeping people up to date on the library as the museum’s knowledge centre. The blog is proving valuable for conveying a more detailed picture in words and images of the Living Archive and the Library Exhibitions. Lectures and questions arising from the Living Archive also add depth to the general information on the website. Due to the library’s impressive architecture, the large number of books it holds and the many activities it houses, the blog serves its makers as ‘a man’s best friend’ but it may also sometimes be ‘too dark to read’.

Be(com)ing Dutch: Eindhoven Caucus Blog

Foto: Bram Saeys

This is the blog of the Eindhoven Caucus, the second phase of the Van Abbemuseum’s prizewinning project Be(com)ing Dutch. A series of debates on cultural identity took place in the museum from 9 November to 6 December 2007. These discussions involved both world famous speakers and the audience. This blog was written during the Caucus by ten journalism students from Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.

Forms of Resistance - blog

Artists and the desire for social change from 1871 to the present
The exhibition Forms of Resistance departs from four historical moments: the French Commune in 1871, the Russian Revolution of 1917, May 1968 and our world after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989). Based on these benchmarks it includes works by Manet, Courbet, Lissitzky, Rodchenko, Malevich, Brigada Ramona Parra, Atelier Populaire, Tucuman Arde, Sherk, Haacke, Johanesson, General Idea, Leonard, Piper, Ressler and Superflex amongst others.

A View into The Kitchen... The Kitchen blog

This is a blog dedicated to the museum musings of the curators and guest curators, invited to the Van Abbemuseum, who work (and play) within the context of the permanent collection and other museum projects. ‘De Keuken’ provides a look into the chaotic kitchen of their thoughts, opinions and generally anything else as they cook up a storm of experiences with the city, its people and the museum. We invite you in as a sous-chef to comment/participate in our forum and nose through the drawers and cupboards of the archives for interesting insights into outsiders inside the VAM.

Heartland Research Blog - the making of an interdisciplinary exhibition project

Foto: Corinne Smith

On the Heartland weblog, the curators and others involved in the project have reported on their research trips, studio visits and meetings with project partners and cultural activists. The interviews, photographs and essays reveal how they, other guest contributors and artists in the Heartland approach their research and arrive at choices. The blog will continue after the completion of the research trips, acting as a tool to remain in discussion and exchange knowledge, furthering the development of the exhibition project in autumn 2008 and 2009.
