Tent. Berlijn, Neuer Berliner kunstverein (NBK), 13-05-2006, 25-06-2006. - The common denominator of the two works in Maryam Jafri's solo show is the logic of the collage and a kind of narration that proceeds by means of juxtaposition. The series "Siege of Khartoum,1884" (2005-2006), is composed of 29 photocollages that place media images of the war in Iraq alongside texts taken from late 19thcentury newspaper articles, in which the British Empire's colonial aspirations in the Middle East emerge. The juxtaposition of archived texts alongside contemporary images generates a snapshot of the genealogy regarding contemporary American and European imperialist aspirations. Since Jafri removes indications of time and place, the texts can also pass as propagandistic dispatches that have just been released. The three-channel video installation, Costume Party (2005), is instead an opulent work that distances itself from the minimal aesthetics found in her previous videos. The story is staged by the 18 characters taking part in a costume party: these include a woman dressed as a monk, a Victorian lady with Asian features, a dark-skinned Roman emperor, centurions, soubrettes, cowboys, crusaders, female soldiers, and a merman. The characters interact following a script that is at times hermetic, each on the basis of the role suggested by his or her costume, and the actions described by the three juxtaposed projections intentionally infringes upon the story's coherence. The work reveals itself as a complex fresco of Western civilization: it is something like a puzzle; it possesses infinite nuances of meaning and results fragmented in the various perspectives and possible angles of observat ion, thereby opening itself up to the observer's interpretation
