The Van Abbemuseum celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2016. The museum will be open for 80 hours from Thursday 14 until Sunday 17 April. Join us, night and day, for a long weekend filled with activities.

PAY ATTENTION: between Thursday 23.00 and Friday 8.00 the museum is only open for guests of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM #1. It is then is closed for regular visitors.

Programme details:


Following the Call for Art by the Van Abbemuseum Choir, the 'open for 80 hours' will be launched by comedian and presenter Marc-Marie Huijbregts. Alderman Mary Ann Schreurs and Van Abbemuseum director Charles Esche will officially open the doors of the museum and will give a word of welcome at the auditorium. Marc-Marie Huijbregts wil talk about his experience in the museum's depot during his search for hidden treasures for the first DWDD pop-up museum.

11.00 - 23.00 CREATE A FLAG

Flags are the perfect decoration if you want to  celebrate something. And we would like to have our front garden filled with flags made by visitors. With a piece of cloth and fabric markers you are invited to create your own flag with a striking text or beautiful drawing. The theme is: your image of the future / world. You can hang your flag in the front garden. 

11.30 – 12.30: TALK SHOW WILD GUEST

In the interactive talk show  the hosts Oscar Kocken & Patrick Nederkoornwill search for the most personal stories using images and music fragments. Guests are secondary school students from the Van Maerlant Lyceum Eindhoven and clients from healthcare facility Archipel.

12.00 - 14.00: 80's PHOTO BOOTH

Photographer Merel will take a picture of you - and your friends - in an original 80's setting.

18.30 – 21.00: ART MAKES YOU SMART*

Organised by the Friends of the Van Abbemuseum, especially for (potential) Friends. A series of presentation by art historian Ko van Dun. Tonight is the 3rd night, registration only for the entire series (starting 24 March) via .

19.00 – 20.30: THE PAVEMENT*
Lecture #4 Who Owns The Street?

Discussion by Marian de Vries (Buro Lubbers) and guests - in Dutch. The pavement is a transitional area between the house and the street, where there is social contact between the residents, and the atmosphere of the street is determined to a large extent. More information and registration.

23.00 – 8.00: NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM #1: FILMS*

Are you an art- / film lover? Then join this event; we will show movies from the Van Abbemuseum collection in our Studio all night long. Watch them seated, or lay down on a bed (and you can even take a nap). With films by: Yael Bartana, Manon de Boer, Johanna Billing, Baldessari, Chto Delat, Jeroen Eisinga, Rodney Graham, Rebecca Horn, Gulsun Karamustafa, Mike Kelley, Mark Lewis, David Maljkovic, Paul McCarthy & Mike Kelley, Avi Mograbi, Deimantas Narkevicius, Bruce Nauman, Martha Rosler, Superflex, Ulay & Abramovic and Tintin Wulia.

Costs: €20, including a welcome drink and coffee and tea in the morning. There is a bar where you can order drinks and snacks during the night.
Places are limited, so reserve in time!

(TIP: for a fresh start on Friday morning, you can join a yoga session in the museum from 9 to 10 am, followed by a healthy breakfast, for only €8. Check out the programme of Friday 15 April for more info and reservation).

12.00 & 17.00: parade through the city centre.
A performance in the city of Eindhoven and in the museum with four colourful banner with texts at both sides that seem to be in contraction with each other. For example 'Follow the Free Guide' versus 'Be The Free Guide'.
The banners are made at Grafisch Atelier Daglicht in Eindhoven.


During the anniversary weekend you can of course visit all our exhibitions! These are:  
- The Collection Now (location: new building) - with more than 600 works from the Van Abbe collection;
- The 1980s. Today's Beginnings? (location: old building);
- Who Owns The Street? (location: tower in the new building);
