The Van Abbemuseum celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2016. The museum will be open for 80 hours from Thursday 14 until Sunday 17 April. Join us, night and day, for a long weekend filled with activities.

PAY ATTENTION: before 9.00 the museum is only open for guests of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM #2: KIDS and it is closed for regular visitors. Between 17.00 and 21.00 the New Building of the museum is closed for the build-up of the nieuwbouw Young Art Night. De Old Building is closed between 18.30 and 21.00.

9.00 – 11.00: BREAKFAST
Start your day with a healthy breakfast for a fair price at Karel 1 Museum Café! The breakfast includes: a glass of fresh orange juice, coffee or tea, a croissant, toasted bread (white or brown), a slice of ham, cheese or chicken, a boiled or fried free-range egg, a tub of butter and a tub strawberry jam. And all this for just € 2.50.
09.00 – 18.30: CREATE A FLAG
Flags are the perfect decoration if you want to celebrate something. And we would like to have our front garden filled with flags made by visitors. With a piece of cloth and fabric markers you are invited to create your own flag with a striking text or beautiful drawing. The theme is: your image of the future / world. You can hang your flag in the front garden.
14.00 - 18.30: FREE ENTRANCE
In relation to the opening of you can enter the museum for free between 14.00 and 18.30.
14.00 – 16.00: FESTIVE FAMILY ART CLUB*
For the 80th anniversary of the Van Abbemuseum we organise a festive Family Art Club. Kids (6- 10 years) and their parents will visit the museum together with the museum teachers. Then they will create their own work of art: a flag which they will hang in the museum’s front garden together. Admittance is € 6,- per child at the museum counter. With every child, one parent is admitted for free. Reserve here.
14.00 – 14.30: FRANCESCA GRILLI - FAMILY
Are you curious to find out how the collection of the Van Abbemuseum sounds? Discover how three generations of one family sing the artworks. This is the third performance of the musical piece Family made by the Italian artist Francesca Grilli (1978, Bologna)and performed by the family Wesselink de Barrientos. The performance is based on works in the collection of the museum and the architecture of the new building of the museum.
15.00 – 18.30: OPENING THE 1980s
The official opening of The 1980s. Today’s Beginnings? starts at 3 pm in the auditorium with a welcome by Charles Esche (director of the Van Abbemuseum), followed by a speech by Zdenka Badovinac (director of Moderna galerija Ljubljana). This exhibition explores the long 1980s from six European perspectives, examining the relevance of this transformative decade for today. This collaborative project comprises a diverse mix of artworks, music, TV, graphic and archival material, exploring a wide set of socio-political themes through the lens of culture.
21.00 – 04.00: NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM #3: YOUNG ART NIGHT
Discover our 80 GLAM! surprises during the 8th Young Art Night. As usual, we present next to our regular exhibitions programme, a very special Young Art Night party programme with music, DJ’s and visuals in the museum cafe, workshops, performances and work by young talented artists. At different times: Griet Menschaert - ART IS REAL! IS ART REAL?
12.00 and 16.00 uur in the city, 13.00 and 15.00 at the museum.
A performance in the city of Eindhoven and in the museum with four colourful banner with texts at both sides that seem to be in contraction with each other. For example 'Follow the Free Guide' versus 'Be The Free Guide'.
The banners are made at Grafisch Atelier Daglicht in Eindhoven.
