A Dutchman in New York - Ton Smits
A Dutchman in New York Ton Smits
This year 100 years ago the Eindhoven cartoonist and painter Ton Smits (1921-1981) was born. In honour of this, various locations in Eindhoven pay attention to his still current oeuvre. Against the glass wall by the museum pond, the Van Abbemuseum exhibits double sided panels with his work.
Panels
On the outside, the panels present drawings related to the theme of water. The inside displays cartoons Smits made for the American magazine The New Yorker, in which he published between 1967 and 1972. In a lightly melancholic way, he addresses existential themes such as the search for happiness, identity and individual freedom.
