Charl Landvreugd examines the visual strategies used by Dutch Afro artists. He argues that the dialogue dominated by American and British art theory frameworks is not always adequate to describe the specific nature of Dutch and continental European Afro art production.
On the 27th May, Landvreugd takes the dynamic model of the Krut'krutu (an Afro-Surinamese gathering in which issues of governance (bestuur) and issues of law are brought before the members of society) to focus on linguistic and curatorial strategies surrounding art made by Afro subjects in the Dutch context. This model is used to unpack the concepts, sensitivities and artistic expressions that are typical of the region.The day consists of two parts. In the first part, invited artists, curators, directors and critics will individually respond (along with a public audience) to key pressing questions that examine Dutch Afro artistic production. In the second part, these same pressing questions will be addressed again, however through a private and focused session (not open to the public).

Alleys Safari by Wildgroei

Meet at the foyer @ 14:00 Van Abbemuseum to then embark upon a bike tour of Eindhoven led by Gewildgroei and Stadsakkers (bring your own bike!).
Gewildgroei
Gewildgroei stands for wanted, wild vegetation, for the city green of the future. Vast sums of money are spent on the extermination of the wild plants while maintaining planted green. Gewildgroei is a movement. We don’t see weeds as a problem but as a partner.
Alleys-Safari
Together we go on a safari throughout the alleys of Eindhoven. City gardeners are not coming there, and neighbourhood residents don’t see it as their property. That’s why alleys are an unintentional free space for plants who want to settle spontaneously. During the walk, we investigate what is living in this alleys and the (possible) role of this urban ecosystem.
StadAkkers (City field)

Since 2013, StadAkkers cultivates organic vegetables for the Foodbank in Eindhoven with the help of volunteers. Everyone is welcomed to join and help, even just for one day or a couple of hours. Some volunteers are unemployed or has a particular health condition but they all support breeding and harvesting all kinds of vegetables.
In 2015, there were three different StadAkkers in Eindhoven spread in diverse neighbourhoods and behind the AZC (Asylum seeker centre) at Castilielaan.
Currently, are they are starting at a new location: the Eikenburg at Aalsterweg 291C.
On Saturday 27th, they invite you to visit the Eikenburg, to meet them, to have a better idea about their activity and maybe, to join them in the future!

Agents of Change is an ongoing program formulated by The Umbrella Network (a collective of social designers, researchers and curators) in collaboration with Van Abbemuseum. The program is focused on highlighting creative strategies building a network of artists, social designers and dynamic community projects in Eindhoven by organising interactive tours, workshops and various activities to create a social map of the city that reveals its current urgencies.

BECOMING MORE… POROUS / A POROUS ARCHIVE (DAI CURATING POSITIONS CLASS)
Location: DIY Archive Van AbbemuseumBaha Görkem Yalım The inclusiveness of the museum as an institution is at the heart of many discussions surrounding the caucus (and indeed the aim of its progressive intent). The archive of a museum is a crucial node in its existing structure in relation to what that museum contains, acknowledges, refuses, claims invisible; how the museum connects, and what it connects-in-between. Imagining museum as a structure that remembers reaffirms the importance of archives as clarifiers of complexities where any position of remembrance is a political act. Archive as the memory of an institution decides what is yet to be memorised. So our question here is; What is it that a museum remembers? awaking the second question; If a museum can remember what it can/should dream of? A Porous Archive will be a place for suggesting this dream, and proposing a future.
DEGREES OF FREEDOM: HUMAN, ROBOT AND THE MEDIUM OF AUTOMATION

Degrees of Freedom is an exhibition in which ideas, forms and experiments related to the Dutch Art Institute’s Roaming Academy class In Dialogue with Robotics are presented to the public. Many of the contributions to Degrees of Freedom are not so much finalised artworks but rather pilots for projects that are at different stages of development. The title refers to the technical term used to describe the extent of a robot’s freedom of motion. This term explaining a robot’s physical characteristics and ability to move converges with wider questions and popular concerns about more ‘disembodied’ computational technologies and artificial intelligences in relation to social and political agency, labour, and financialisation. How can art-oriented research inhabit these interconnected fields of inquiry? In what way can it contribute to this discussion? These are the most general questions that this class has tried to engage with and what this exhibition attempts to address through its array of contributions.
