Hieronymus Bosch as inspiration

In 2016 the Brabant region is dedicated to Hieronymus Bosch (ca. 1450-1516), the most famous Dutch painter from the Middle Ages. 500 years since his death, his universal visual language full of human emotions and surreal visions, is still a source of inspiration for artists around the world.

With the Bosch Grand Tour seven museums in the region of Brabant will present a programme of contemporary art in 2016 to flank the exhibition Hieronymus Bosch - Visions of a genius (13 February – 8 May 2016) in the Noordbrabants Museum in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Bosch Grand Tour is is a project of Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, De Pont museum Tilburg, MOTI Museum of the Image Breda, Natuurmuseum Brabant Tilburg, Het Noordbrabants Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch, Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch en het TextielMuseum Tilburg.

The museum presents contemporary art and contemporary subjects. But the museum also looks to see how the past is relevant to the present.  For the Bosch Grand Tour it shows how the ideas and working methods of Hieronymous Bosch are still up-to-date, by linking them with the themes and artists of the present.

In the exhibition  (16 April - 25 September) we see how artists challenge perceived understandings of their times – whether in relation to power, identity or sexuality, a strategy taken up by Bosch 500 years ago. In <media 10277 - external-link-new-window "Opens external link in new window">the exhibition newspaper</media>, Bosch expert Jos Koldeweij looks at some of the artworks in the exhibition and makes connections to the themes in Bosch' paintings.
