China's past, present and future Part of Qiu Zhijie: Journeys without Arrivals

18/05/2017 - 29/06/2017
18:45 - 20:45
Lectures on China's past, present and future

China is never out of the papers these days, yet there are all still so many things we don’t know about it. In 2016 Ruben Terlou fascinated us with his series “Langs de oevers van de Yangtze” (Along the banks of the Yangtze) (VPRO). At the same time Chinese artists have a growing profile: from Ai Wei Wei to Qiu Zhijie. While for many people the phrase “Made in China” is still associated with cheap plastic, leaders like Donald Trump feel that their prosperity and security is under serious threat from the Chinese advance.

So what is it about this country which has been making an impression since time immemorial? After a two hundred year dip during which China was isolated or colonised, the country has made a big comeback. What are the characteristics of this country in the cultural, economic and political fields? What are its strengths and weaknesses? And what do Confucius, Marx and Mao have to offer us today?

As part of the Qiu Zhijie programme, Journeys without Arrivals, over three evenings you can hear about the successes, trials and tribulations of China. Our host will be Evert Jan Ouweneel. He is a cultural philosopher with many years experience of describing cultural developments and is interested in the reasons behind events and their interrelationships. He has entertained large audiences with one-day seminars. He coached diplomats at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has frequently advised top civil servants in the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food on China.

Dates

Thursday 18 May: (SOLD OUT)
THE PAST – In one evening we walk through 5000 years of Chinese civilisation, with attention devoted to the “mandate of heaven” which determined the rise and fall of many dynasties, the centuries that China was ahead in the world, how Europe colonised China, and the crisis of the past two hundred years.

Thursday 8 June:
TODAY – A comparison of Chinese and Western thought with attention devoted, amongst other things, to family-focused thinking in China and the contractual thinking in Western Europe, to Taoism, Confucianism and Chinese communism, and to the and/and way of thinking of the Chinese and the either/or way of thinking of the West.

Thursday 29 June:
THE FUTURE – A clarifying insight into the six ingredients of China’s new role in the world. These are the masses, progress, cash, control, brainpower and hope. Many factors will be considered that obstruct and promote China’s future.

The lectures will be given in Dutch. The programme lasts from 6.45 p.m. to 8.45 p.m.
