In conversation: Minerva Cuevas with Christiane Berndes & Annie Fletcher artist talk
On the occasion of the re-installation of Minerva Cuevas' work Social Entomology (2008), as part of our current collection exhibition Once Upon a Time... The Collection Now, curators Christiane Berndes and Annie Fletcher will focus on this installation in their talk with artist Minerva Cuevas. They will use it as a departure point to discuss Cuevas’ work, placing it in a broader context of her social and political practice.
The Van Abbemuseum has had a long and diverse engagement with the art of Minerva Cuevas (Mexico city 1975). Cuevas had a solo exhibition at the Van Abbe in 2008 after which we acquired the installation Social Entomology. In the same year she also developed a large scale mural Not Impressed by Civilisation for Het Oog. Her socially engaged and dispersed practice, which includes her long-term project Better Life Corporation (1998–ongoing), went on to significantly influence the research on art and use developed by the Van Abbemuseum and Tanja Brugera for the exhibition Museum of Arte Útil.
This event is a collaboration with the School of Missing Studies at the Sandberg Insititute.
