Museum Takeover: Bodies of Knowledge Three day intervention at the Van Abbemuseum
From 3 to 5 May 2019 the Van Abbemuseum hosts Museum Take Over: Bodies of Knowledge. Comprising talks, performances, collective encounters, exhibitions, food and music the three-day programme is conceived as a take over of the museum’s regular programming. Download the programme here.
Taking place across different parts of the museum, it invites us to consider what types of knowledge and bodies are sanctioned by the museum: How might the presence of forgotten, deviant, queer, non-normative bodies and knowledges function as a momentary take over of the museum?
A major component of the weekend will see the outcomes of the museum’s research progamme, Deviant Practice, presented. Working with local and institutional histories as well as constituencies and infrastructures: from the history of the museum during the second world war, an expansive presentation of the Gate Foundation Archive, the internationally renowned Vagevuur in Eindhoven, or the recent history of gabber music in the city, the research projects will be presented across the auditorium, galleries and spaces of the museum.
Alongside this a series of performances and encounters between the museum, its collection and bodies will be staged including Yael David’s ongoing research project A Daily Practice and a newly commissioned performance by dancer and choreographer Joy Mariama Smith. On Saturday evening, the museum café will be open late with DJs, food and drink.
