To accompany Het Oog’s current installation Echo Chamber, Navine G. Khan-Dossos has invited Lisa Downing to discuss their shared interest in transgressive narratives relating to women, in this case relating to extreme forms of Islam. They will explore aspects of the phenomena of young women, particularly in the UK and Europe, who have aligned themselves with violent and radical religious beliefs, thinking about how they see themselves, and, how society views them.
Lisa Downing is an author and academic, who is currently Professor of French Discourses of Sexuality at the University of Birmingham, UK. Her research interests focus on questions of gender and sexuality, social power, and cultural codes of ‘normality’ and ‘abnormality’. She is the author of a number of books, including recently ‘The Subject of Murder: Gender, Exceptionality and the Modern Killer’ (University of Chicago, 2013), and she is currently writing a book on female selfishness.
