Performance 'Carnaval de Oruro' Sachi Miyachi

29/03/2015
14:00

 Het Oog (the eye)

The sixth and last performance by artist Sachi Miyachi is based on 'Carnaval de Oruro', celebrated in Oruro, a mining city and folklore capital of Bolivia. The carnival is informed by two thousand years of history. The festival originated from the Ito festival for the pre-Incan Uru people. this old religious celebration was halted by Spanish colonisation, but continued in the form of a Catholic ritual celebrating Candlemas, the Virgin of Candelaria (Virgin of Socavón). By untying the historical knot, Miyachi would like to present the carnival as a model of Globalisation evoking the richness of local and ancient traditions. Her journey passes along Andean customs, Pachamama (Mother Earth), Christian syncretism, slavery and the deep grounds of the mining industry and its minerals. After the performance Miyachi will give you a recipe to take home and to perform the ritual yourself.
