Arte Útil in Spanish roughly translates as useful art, but also suggests art as a device or tool. And as part of a year-long investigation by artist Tania Bruguera, the Van Abbemuseum will open the Museum of Arte Útil in December, 2013. In connection with the museum's contextualisation within a Dutch context, research was done into the story of SKOR (Foundation for Art and Public Domain) and public art commissioning practices in the region. This overlap with the concerns of the Scenographies project – now running at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam and initiated by the Lectoraat for Art & Public Space (Gerrit Rietveld Academie) – which seeks to raise these issues around the current public relevance of certain artistic approaches as well as the use-value of the archive left by SKOR since its closure, was an ideal excuse for a collaboration between the two programmes.

On Saturday 19 October, 2013 from 14.00-17.00 a seminar will take place at the Van Abbemuseum in which questions of usership, participation and spectatorship in relation to art's civic life as well as the museum and archive as public spaces, will be opened up and addressed in the context of both the Museum of Arte Útil and Scenographies.

Scenographies (14.09-17.11.13) at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam includes contributions from James Beckett, Francis Burger, High&Low Bureau, informal strategies, Alexandra Landré, Cindy Moorman, Antonis Pittas, the Arte Útil Museum and more. Curator: Clare Butcher.
