Symposium 30 years Heineken prize for Art The future of patronage for the arts, a series of prospects for the future
On 20 September, the Van Abbemuseum and foundation Dr. A. H. Heineken Prize for Art organize a symposium within the framework of the 30 years Heineken Prize for Art exhibition. On this day, the history and future of the Heineken Prize will be placed in the broader landscape of art philanthropy and private support of art. What are the opportunities and challenges for public-private partnerships? How do collectors establish themselves as a new patron and what role does the prize receive in the light of all these developments? These questions and others structure presentations and discussions with experts from the field to think about the coming 30 years.
When the prize – 30 years ago – was awarded for the first time in 1988 to painter Toon Verhoef, art patronage was very different from today. Concepts such as ‘crowdfunding’ did not exist yet, and internet was still in its infancy. The art world was provincial compared with the current globalization of the sector. Art practice itself also changed from object-oriented to process-oriented work, where the end product is not always material in character. With these big shifts in mind, we want to move the imaginary lines into the future and reflect on how new initiatives could possibly in 30 years become the norm.

DR. A.H. HEINEKEN PRIZE FOR ART
The Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Art has been awarded every two years since 1988 to an outstanding artist living and working in the Netherlands. It is the largest visual arts prize in the Netherlands, financed from a private fund, the Dr. A.H. Heineken Foundation for Art. Alfred Heineken introduced the prize, which was named after himself, as recognition and encouragement of talent in the arts in the Netherlands. It is a prestigious and generous prize, also in comparison with international awards.
The laureate receives 100,000€, half of which is intended for a publication and/or an exhibition. The Dr. A.H. Heineken Prize for Art—together with five major prizes for science—is awarded by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
