The Mapping Utopia workshop For pupils in secondary education

01/04/2017 - 24/09/2017
11:00 - 17:00
tour and workshop

This can be booked on Thursdays and Fridays from 11.00. a.m. – 5.00 p.m. while the exhibition is on, from 1 April to 24 September 2017.
Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, about a strange and unknown island where people lived together happily and harmoniously, was published 501 years ago. Differences in religion, social background and political preferences did not lead to conflict there, and there was a respect for diversity. Thomas More illustrated his story with a map of the island.  Religions, philosophies, lifestyles, myths and developments are also an important source of inspiration for the Chinese artist Qiu Zhijie. He also reveals his social utopias in a series of maps.
As well as Qiu Zhijie, there are also other artists in the Van Abbemuseum who work on creating utopias and maps and we’ll look at these works in the museum. Then the pupils will create their own utopian country using ink, crayon, paint and felt tips on an extremely long table with a long roll of paper. During the exhibition these shared utopias will become a growing joint artwork of imaginative visions of the future.
