Van Abbemuseum during GLOW - Between Darkness and Light / Les Ombres
Van Abbemuseum during GLOW Between Darkness and Light / Les Ombres
In the installation In Between Darkness and Light (after William Blake) by the Scottish artist Douglas Gordon, two classic films are screened on the front and back of a life-size screen. The screen is semi-transparent so the images from the one film are visible in the other. The Song of Bernadette (Henry King, 1943) tells a story about a young girl who has a vision of a mysterious woman. Is she the Virgin Mary? The Exorcist (William Friedkin, 1973) is about a young girl who is possessed by an evil force. Both characters try to keep control of their minds, but because of these overlapping images, they are suffering even more of these external powers.
French artist Christian Boltanski plays a shadow game with supernatural creatures and skeletons in Les Ombres. Magnified by lightning beams, the viewer's imagination and fantasy will be triggered by these moving shadows.
During GLOW, local and international artists and designers show their creative work with artificial light, basedon the use of new media technologies. This year’s central theme is Urban Playground.
