Van Abbemuseum Vitrine: Selection Dick Middelweerd At Van der Valk Hotel Eindhoven
The more than 3,000 contemporary artworks in the Van Abbemuseum constitute the collection of the city of Eindhoven. These are works of art which deserve to be seen and sometimes pop up in unexpected places. Part of the museum’s collection is on display at the Van der Valk Hotel Eindhoven, designed and created by Piet Hein Eek. This display in a glass cart has a central place in the hotel lobby.
The works exhibited are changed regularly and prominent figures from Eindhoven and the surrounding area are able to choose works from the museum’s collection. The exhibited works, that were selected by the fifth guest curator, Dick Middelweerd, will be on display from Saturday 12 October.
Dick Middelweerd's choice
Dick Middelweerd's choice is all about his passion for cooking. Eating, food and ingrediënts all are at the base of his selection that is on show at the Vitrine. The work Campbell's Soup by Andy Warhol is of course part of that. This famous iconic image of Warhol, inspired by the design of this American Soup brand, is well known within Modern Art history. Middelweerd also chose the work Onions by Carel Visser. Recognition of the season's vegetables, fruit and flowers from June and July bring a smile to his face. "We always work with the seasons in mind. That's why I like this painting, the whole composition is spot on."
A prominent place in the Vitrine is reserved for seven versions of the tableware that was produced in the years 1986 to 1990 for the anniversary of the Chamber of Commerce. Famous artists, like Marlene Dumas, Lawrence Weiner and Carel Visser, designed a items for this series. Only 250 pieces were available for each set. A video by Martha Rosler is the closing piece of the choice of the chef. In Semiotics of the Kitchen, Rosler parodies cooking shows made famous by chef, author, and television personality Julia Child.
