Compass 1 : 1945-1961 Painters from Paris

Starting point of this exhibition was to investigate the connection between Paris/France and the Netherlands, since many Dutch artists traveled to the south to be inspired. The exhibition tried to grasp the French modern art after WWII, what was so special about geographical category and how this French approach on making art influenced other artists. These art expressions were divided into four categories, in which each category represented a certain attitude on the relation between visible reality and the visual translation of this into art. What was the attitude of several artists towards their abstract artworks, were they mainly based on nature or personal feelings or abstract ideas? Ideas about whether the emphasis of their art should be more on the subconscious influences or the rational ones differed. he exhibition made these various approaches and attitudes in the context of the Paris art world visible.
