Your role

As Senior Curator Exhibitions and Time-Based Practices, you will be responsible for developing the vision and strategy for the presentation, accessibility and activation of the Van Abbemuseum's collections. You combine subject expertise with innovation and work on projects that have local, national and international impact. In this role, you will act as a key adviser to the museum's leadership and represent the museum within relevant professional networks.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Developing and delivering exhibitions and presentations of the museum collection.
  • Shaping and implementing an integrated strategy for digital collection access and engagement.
  • Contributing to the development of the collection policy, strategic plan and the museum's long-term vision.
  • Initiating and supervising research into the collection, and sharing knowledge with students and professionals.
  • Representing the Van Abbemuseum in regional, national and international networks and partnerships.

Who will you work with?

You will work closely with nearly all departments across the Van Abbemuseum, including Production & Exhibitions, Marketing, Public Engagement, Fundraising, Collection Management, Registration, and the Library & Archive. You will also maintain relationships with artists, municipal partners, cultural organisations, funding bodies, museums and international collaborators. You will report directly to the Artistic Director and work closely with the Managing Director.

What will you bring?

You are able to analyse developments both within and beyond the museum sector and translate them into a clear vision, strategic direction and tangible results. You can connect artistic, organisational and societal issues, make well-considered decisions, and successfully guide projects from concept through to delivery.

In addition, you will have:

  • An academic degree, preferably in Art History, Museum Studies or a related field.
  • At least five years' experience developing and delivering exhibitions, collection projects or artistic programmes within a museum environment.
  • Preferably multidisciplinary experience, particularly in the field of performance art.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of modern and contemporary art.
  • Insight into collection management, collection development and the digital accessibility of collections.
  • A strong professional network at local, national and international level.
  • Experience in project management, fundraising, policy development and acquisitions.

What do we offer?

With us, you will have a role that makes a meaningful impact on both the city and the municipality of Eindhoven. You will work in an informal organisational culture where a healthy work-life balance is valued. In addition, we offer an attractive package of employment benefits, including:

  • A gross monthly salary between €3,824 and €5,624 (based on a 36-hour working week), depending on your qualifications, knowledge and experience.
  • An initial one-year contract, with the intention of converting this into a permanent position.
  • 28 days of annual leave (full-time). You can also accrue additional leave days (ADV), giving you approximately ten weeks of leave per year in total (pro rata for part-time positions).
  • Each month, we set aside 17.05% of your gross salary (including holiday allowance and year-end bonus) in an Individual Choice Budget (IKB). This is additional funding that you can use as you see fit, for example to purchase extra leave, receive a bicycle allowance, or have the amount paid out directly.
  • An excellent pension scheme with ABP, of which the employer contributes 70%, including additional cover in the event of death or incapacity for work.
  • Travel allowance:
    • Public transport: 100% reimbursement.
    • Car: €0.25 per kilometre (commuting distance), from 7.5 km up to 40 km one-way.
    • Bicycle/e-bike/walking: €0.25 per kilometre, with no maximum.
  • We value your wellbeing: you will receive up to €240 net per year for activities that help keep you fit and energised.

About the Van Abbemuseum

The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven is one of Europe's leading museums of contemporary art. The museum holds an extensive international collection of more than 3,800 artworks and a library containing over 140,000 publications, alongside several significant archives.

Openness, hospitality and knowledge-sharing are central to the museum's mission. We present art that reflects on some of the major questions of our time, including the legacy of Dutch colonial history, climate change and new ways of living together. Through international collaboration and exchange, the museum is also a place where creative cross-pollination takes place: a source of wonder, inspiration and imagination.

The Van Abbemuseum endorses the Cultural Diversity Code and strives to reflect the diversity of society. We are a learning organisation and particularly welcome applications from candidates who contribute to the diversity of our team.

As part of the Municipality of Eindhoven, we are helping to build a city where everyone feels at home and innovation can flourish. Diversity and inclusion are essential to this ambition: there is room for everyone. It is through our differences that we achieve our shared goals.
