A Lasting Truth Is Change Viewing the collection differently

02/04/2022 - 24/07/2022
Curator: Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide
Shaking up conventions and reversing roles

With a playful design, A Lasting Truth Is Change breaks through standard ideas about collecting and presenting art. The Van Abbemuseum invites you to take a fresh look. The artworks in this exhibition encourage you to look at the world you live in differently; to be curious about new stories that inspire, excite and activate.

Roles reversed

To lend you a hand in gaining new insights, the exhibition shakes up the hierarchy between ‘beginners’ and ‘experts’. Who is in charge? And who decides what is allowed? This set-up challenges visitors - children and adults, experienced and inexperienced - to engage in conversation together about the themes the exhibition addresses.

Cross-links

A Lasting Truth Is Change brings together some ninety pieces from the museum's own collection with ten well-chosen loans, including several new works. This combination of established names and emerging makers questions the composition of the Van Abbemuseum's collection: who is included and why? And who is missing? This makes A Lasting Truth Is Change an exciting counterpart to the acclaimed multi-year collection presentation Delinking and Relinking, which opened in September 2021.

Publication

With essays and conversations, the publication for professionals accompanying A Lasting Truth Is Change dives deeper into the themes raised by the exhibition. Language: English, compiled by: Taylor Le Melle and Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide. Available in the (online) museum shop from May 2022. Price € 19.

In the press

"A Lasting Truth Is Change takes visitors on a well-informed tour of the contemporary arts landscape. There is much to discover, especially for the trained viewer. Urgent social issues are addressed in a subtle and artistic manner. An exhibition full of visual rhyme and alliteration." Metropolis M (Dutch)

"This is an exhibition bursting with fun. An exhibition that does things differently and presents art in unexpected ways. The visitor's body plays an important role: you can climb on a climbing frame or lie down on the orange carpet. An exhibit that will linger on for a long time.” The Eindhovens Dagblad (Dutch)
