Podcast: Eindhoven: a HipHop story
What is the influence of HipHop on Eindhoven? And how do we ensure that these stories are preserved?
In the unique podcast series Eindhoven: a HipHop Story, the rich history and impact of Eindhoven's HipHop scene is brought to life. In three episodes, MC Melodee (rapper, entrepreneur and co-curator of the exhibition of the same name) takes listeners through the local HipHop culture and the community behind it. In the process, she engages with key figures and explores HipHop's lasting influence on the city as well as ways we can ensure these stories are preserved. The first episode will appear on all podcast platforms on 8 December 2024, the last day that the eponymous exhibition Eindhoven: a HipHop story, an exhibition about HipHop in Eindhoven created by the community itself, is on view at the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven.
Eindhoven: a HipHop story
'HipHop culture could be about turntable skills, graffiti art, breaking or rapping; but it's always about the people making it happen.' This was once on a flyer for an illegal HipHop party in Eindhoven. It symbolizes the entrepreneurial spirit of this subculture that came from the United States in the early 1980s. The raw, industrial character of Eindhoven proved to be a fertile breeding ground for this scene. Forty years later, HipHop has entered mainstream culture. The experimental exhibition Eindhoven: a HipHop story shows the influence of this subculture on the identity of the city, told from the community and the audience itself.
