Loan procedure
The Van Abbemuseum regularly loans artworks to other museums and institutions for temporary exhibitions. The lender also should fulfill to the ICOM norms for museological institutions. If required we request a facility report.
The loan request must contain the following details:
- Name and address details from the institution which is requesting the loan
- Contact details of the requesting party
- Name of the exhibition and exhibition period.
- Place of the exhibition
- Name of the artist
- Titel of the artwork
- Description of the exhibition concept
- Importance of the requested loan within the context of the exhibition
- For a touring venue: all details per institution
A request for a loan should be submitted in writing to the director of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, at least six months prior to commencement of the loan. These six months are necessary for a balanced consideration, to prepare the loan with care and to fit in the activities related to the requested loan into the working schedule of the Collection Department.
For fragile and complex works the Van Abbemuseum can decide to let a courier accompany the work. Because the Collection Department of the Van Abbemuseum isn’t calculated on such activities, extra capacity has to be employed. Unfortunately, therefore the salary costs of the courier have to be charged with the borrower.

The Van Abbemuseum recognises that a loan may be cancelled or works withdrawn for valid reasons, but reserves the right to charge the borrower for any conservation or other costs which may have been incurred. Cancellations must be made in writing to the registrar.
