KNUST is the graphic department of Extrapool, a venue and art gallery located in Nijmegen. KNUST finds its origin in the early eighties and this thesis examines the role of literature in these early years (1983-1989). The first chapter will discuss the social and cultural context in which KNUST arises, which consists of the emergence of punk, the increase of squatting, and the do-it-yourself culture that gains popularity. The second chapter describes the historyof KNUST, with special notice of the position of KNUST in the field of art. Chapter 3 gives an overview of early KNUST publications in which literature plays a substantial role, and examines the relation between text and image in these publications. The fourth chapter looks into where the authors described in chapter 3 end up in the field of literature after their time at KNUST. The final chapter concludes that the role of literature in the early days of KNUST is one of being against the grain: text is inextricably interconnected with the images and authors that feel themselves drawn to KNUST are artists that don’t fit the mainstream.
