De afgelopen jaren hebben politieke verschuivingen, de financiële crisis en klimaatverandering niet alleen voor veel onrust gezorgd; zij zijn ook de aanleiding voor een herdefiniëring van het civiele domein. Het civiele domein is de maatschappelijke ruimte waar individuen en gemeenschappen elkaar ontmoeten, met elkaar in gesprek gaan, en zich inzetten voor sociale en politieke kwesties. Het is een domein dat nog niet beheerst wordt door wetgeving of marktwerking. Een domein waar het collectief zijn invloed kan laten gelden en waar kritische geluiden en politieke alternatieven uitgewisseld worden. Dit boek kijkt naar verschillende artistieke praktijken, activistische platforms en nieuwe burgerinitiatieven en stelt daarbij de vraag hoe kunst en cultuur de bouwstenen kunnen bieden voor een sterk civiel domein. Hoe brengen kunstenaars en andere betrokkenen ‘de kunst van “civil action”’ in de praktijk? Welke strategieën kunnen zij toepassen om hun lokale invloed te vergroten?
