Description

'A 12003000 =25= =3x10= Noir Blanc Rouge' by the Romanian artist André Cadere is composed of 12 small wooden discs in which the thickness is equal to the diameter. They are varnished in various colours, creating a sort of stick and each colour occurs the same number of times. The colours alternate in different combinations.

Cadere’s work consists wholly of “barres de bois rond”. The sticks can vary in length from thirty centimetres to two metres. They always consist of painted segments carried out in different colours. Cadere restricts himself to the use of eight colours: black, white, yellow, orange, red, purple, blue and green. The way in which the colours alternate is determined by a mathematical system. He uses two combination systems indicated by the letter A and B. However, he ignores the system by leaving an “error” in every stick by exchanging the colours.

Cadere prefers to present his work in a random way. For example, he may place it in the corner of the gallery where other works attract much more attention. He raises his work and the context in which it functions for discussion. He invites responses by carrying his work around with him everywhere: in galleries, but also in restaurants, in the metro, or on walks through the town. He said: “The aim of my work is to be seen, which means that indifferent, hostile or loving responses are not important. I am not collecting the feelings of the public. My only aim is to do everything I can to show what I am doing.” Both in his work and in his presentation, Cadere wishes to shake the foundations of the rules that exist in the art world. He uses a system which he undermines at the same time. In this respect his work is related to that of the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers.
