Description

"April 21, 1978"

Artist Sarah Charlesworth shows us a series of newspaper headlines from around the world. They all publish the photo of Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro, which had been released by the terrorist organization Brigate Rosso (Red Brigades). They threatened to assassinate him to reinforce their demands. As a sign of life, Moro is seen holding a newspaper dated April 19th. Ironically, it is the newspaper La Repubblica, with the headline "MORO ASSASINATO?" (Was Moro Assassinated?). This released photo appeared in newspapers worldwide on April 21, 1978.

Charlesworth collected 45 newspapers and reproduced them in their original format, masking all text. Through the placement and size of Moro's photo on the front page, each newspaper illustrates its own local significance relative to other news items. A key aspect of her work is how mass media influences the perception of events.
