Description

Here, artist Moelyono reuses and reinterprets Raden Saleh’s composition in the historical painting 'Penangkapan Pangeran Diponegoro' (The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro) from 1857. The original painting depicts an important moment in the Java War (1825-1830) where Prince Diponegoro, among the Javanese knights, was fiercely resisting Dutch colonial occupation. Although the prince was invited to negotiate a truce with Lieutenant General Baron de Kock, he was tricked and captured by the Dutch.
