BrrrD-DDrrr Café Deutschland
Description
Here, Jörg Immendorff paints his dissolved fatherland. The snow-covered boundary posts that cross the pub in the painting refer to the Berlin Wall. The country is divided into West-German FRG and East-German GDR. We see Immendorff lying on the floor, reaching out his hand to his East-German colleague A. R. Penck. According to the artist, the cement boundary ‘defies the basic human needs of free exchange, contact and warmth’. With his series of paintings Café Deutschland he wanted ‘to connect his joy of painting to his wish to defeat the wall’.
