Description

The artistic practice of artist and DJ Marcel van den Berg encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, and screen printing. This combined approach manifests itself in an intuitive, associative, and physical way of working. Van den Berg: "The raw energy in my work can be associated with old school abstract expressionism, but also street culture in its many forms." The color palette in Van den Berg's work originates from the Rastafari and Pan-African movements.

Lyrics from 20th- and 21st-century black music, originating from the US and the Caribbean, play a vital role in his work. The title of this painting is taken from the hip-hop song "We The People…"; a political track from A Tribe Called Quest's 2016 album "We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service." It highlights the issues facing modern America, including police brutality, racial and religious discrimination, threats of deportation, and a lack of equality for women. This song references the preamble to the U.S. Constitution, which begins with the words "We the People." The music's messages about injustice, social issues, racism, but also pride and joy inspire him. It also encourages him to use perseverance, endurance, and competition as positive forces, and thus, together with other artists, creators, and friends, achieve greater goals
