Elba - St. Helena
Description
This work consists of three etchings, the left and the right of which depict the bow ties/room walls motif that often appears in Daniëls’s work from the 1985-1987 period. The work on the left also features what appears to be a top hat, while in the work on the right we can make out a flamingo and a pyramid. The etching in the middle depicts a zebra in a barren landscape. There appears to be a person imprisoned behind the stripes of the zebra. Given the title "Elba-St Helena", this could be Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled on the islands of Elba and Saint Helena. Consequently, the pyramid might refer to Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt.
