Description
Marlene Dumas sees herself through the eyes of others. The originally South African Dumas raises the issue of oversimplifying the world: white is good and dark is bad? The title of her self-portrait ‘The Evil is Banal’ refers to a book by Hannah Arendt: how the ordinary man could commit terrible crimes in Nazi Germany. Dumas uses portraits to investigate identity and stereotyping, among other things.
