Description

‘My gardens are not meant to merge with a landscape. They want to exhibit themselves plainly and you are allowed to experience them as artificial. Being an artist, I don’t have to consider anyone or anything.’ Speaking about the thinking behind his Labyrinth & Pleasure Gardens, Jan Vercruysse claims he doesn’t need to consider anyone – despite the works being proposals for public gardens, two of which have been realized. The place of art and the artist in society is an important theme for Vercruysse, which quite literally takes shape in his gardens. Vercruysse cultivates landscapes to make statements about his identity as an artist.
