Tandak Samira
Description
Ludruk is a form of popular theatre from East Java. It originated as a way of resisting Dutch domination. This form of art also accommodates trans women in the feminine roles. In the painting 'Tandak Samira', artist Moelyono tells the story of Sakera, who was a leader in the peasant resistance movement against the Dutch colonial plantation system. The rulers captured him by tricking him into a Ludruk play. Some characters in this painting refer to Rembrandt’s 'The Night Watch' from 1642.
