Description

Rebecca Horn was assigned an old classroom to create a work for Documenta IX in Kassel. This environment evoked a distressing memory. As a high school student, Horn peed herself during a presentation in front of the class. She incorporated this experience into her installation "The Moon, the Child, and the River of Anarchy." Rows of school desks hang upside down from the ceiling, from which a tangle of lead pipes emerge. Black ink flows through the pipes, which are collected by funnels and pumped back up. The whole thing creates the impression of a living organism. Is this Horn's nightmare or her curse?
