Description
At the end of 1987, René Daniëls suffered a brain haemorrhage from which he would never fully recover. He lost the use of his right hand, the one he used to draw and paint with, and suffered from aphasia, so he was no longer able to talk. He learned to communicate through gestures and nods and complemented this by drawing or writing down a few words with his left hand. He also sketched and made notes for himself every day. He started painting again in 2006. In new small-format paintings, he uses words and visual quotes to allude to his pre-1988 work.
In "Z.T.", 2006, we can see stands holding numerous microphones connected by lines to form a kind of constellation. At the top the words ‘twee’ (two) and ‘lingen’ (tweelingen = twins/Gemini) are separated from each other. Being born on May 23rd, Daniëls’s star sign is Gemini. The microphones are found in various paintings from 1987. The dark figure dominating the painting could be a self-portrait. A similar person with his beard being blown upwards appears in the 1982 painting "Cocoanuts".
