Description
In 1982, René Daniëls created several works with fish, which all included "Hollandse Nieuwe" in their title. They depict herring eating each other. For example in our collection see "Hollandse nieuwe ontdekt hoe goed Hollandse nieuwe smaakt". It is not the case in this print. The fish are swimming in the same direction. The image is depicted in the sketch-like style that is typical of Daniëls. In the foreground we can make out two ice skates, and in the background there is a three-masted boat. The brush strokes that make up the boat’s hull are repeated in the water where they resemble waves. The diamond pattern of the scales can also be seen in the water where it could represent nets. The curved shape of blade on the skate on the left appears to be echoed in the contours of the fish above it. Although Daniëls often uses shapes to invoke associations, he also thinks in terms of meanings: fish swim in a school - a school has a board - a board makes rules - the EC (European Community) comes up with provisions on the mesh size of fishing nets - what will the fish think of this? The title of this work indicates that they object to it!
