Description

Solakov donated this drawing in 2013 and wrote the following notes to accompany the work: "One of the very few places where it was possible for an artist and/or an art critic to go beyond the Iron Curtain was HISK (National Higher Institute for Fine Arts) in Antwerp. Of course the artist/critic should have had many exhibitions or publications and also to know English or French to be considered to go there. I spent five months at HISK between October 7, 1985, and the end of February 1986. This was an extremely important period for me as I was able to visit museums and really focus on my work in my small studio. I made hundreds of drawings like this one (the view from Ghent with its gloomy atmosphere) until I "discovered the bicycle" and arrived at the ink-and-wash technique I still use today." Solakov concluded that this (d) drawing was among the last ones he did in Antwerp.
